Ascension 41:50

about

Ascension was completed over a period of about 14 months. I began writing the record soon after the completion of "The Witch" with the intention of just writing music until I had enough songs I saw as good enough to make an album with. This way of working I found to be quite freeing because I didn't feel as if I was working towards some greater whole which is how I had previously worked. This new approach gave me much perspective on my previous work and how my way of working towards an album had always gotten in the way of making each individual song as good as it could be. With that in mind I wrote, somewhat aimlessly until, somehow, I ended up with the 9 tracks that make up this record. Each is its own little paradise within itself and each was born in it's own way. Some took month and several substantial revisions to get to a point where I was happy with it, while others took mere days. It was an interesting and enriching process for me and I am beyond pleased with the results

Another factor that greatly enriched the material on Ascension was the gracious and invaluable contributions of the hardworking and talented guests who played various instruments across the songs. The titular track was brought to heights I thought near impossible by the presence of the exceptionally talented horn players who graced the track. The downright angelic voice of Sophia Stephens lifted many of the songs up to the sky, her voice helping mask my......lacklustre vocal performance. To all those who contributed to this album in any way, you have my eternal gratitude.

Special thanks to the live band who helped flesh out many of the songs in concert:
Bentley Parker, Max Bradley, Dillon Butcher and William Ackroyd. I step forward now with you all by my side and hope that together we can create something even greater. Five heads are better than one.

Thank you for listening.

I love you,

-Eli Larkindale.
